Kayaking is another pastime which has seen a steady increase in popularity since the 1990's. There are many different types of Kayaking available, from the slow upriver experiences to the white water variety for the more 'extreme' kayakers.

Kayaks are broadly split into the following types:

1. Sea Kayaks

These are still based upon the traditional design, but geared at the 'open water' scenario. There are many design choices, made from varying materials, but they are all designed with the Sea in mind. They tend to have a longer 'water-line' (for straight travel rather than maneuverability). They also have storage space for cargo, for obvious reasons. The design of the Sea Kayak is such that it is more 'sea-worthy' than the average kayak, designed to be more water-proof and sometimes with water-tight sections for storage, etc.

2. Whitewater Kayaks

These are designed for high maneuverability, usually for a single person. They are generally made from semi-rigid, high-impact plastic - this is to allow them to be bounced off rocks without causing damage. They tend to be shorter than most other kayaks, and this makes them slower too. 'Racing' kayaks are made to regulation lengths and this is a little longer than the 'play' kayaks. They are also made from fibre-reinforced resin making them faster, lighter and more rigid.

3. Recreational Kayaks

These are designed for the casual kayaker who is more interested in photography, scenery, fishing or peaceful paddling. They tend to have a wider beam, for stability and a larger 'cockpit' for ease of entry/exit. They tend to have limited cargo capacity, although are more geared towards the 'touring' aspect of kayaking.

4. Surf Kayaks

These are sometimes referred to as 'Surf Skis' and are designed primarily for surfing breaking waves (and also surf rescue). They are designed for speed and control (to make lots of 'moves'). They tend to be a little longer than the other types.
